Before Europeans came to Western Australia in 1829 all the forests were old growth. Since then about 40% of the original forests have been lost forever, cleared to make way for farms, towns and roads. Another 50% has already been logged, leaving just 10% of the original old growth forest unlogged.

Of the 2.5 million hectares (ha) of forest left in WA only about 350 000 ha are unlogged old growth. 40% of that is available for logging.

Because there is so little old growth left conservationists would like to see it all protected.
